What traffic school does for you

  • Keeps the point off your recordFinish the course for an eligible ticket and Vehicle Code 1808.7 makes the conviction confidential. No point is counted.
  • Keeps your insurance rate where it isA confidential conviction cannot be disclosed to anyone but a court, so your insurer never prices it. In the state survey, 12,623 of 12,626 quotes charge more for a ticket they can see.
  • Protects your licenseThe DMV presumes a negligent operator at 4 points in 12 months, 6 in 24 or 8 in 36 (Vehicle Code 12810.5). A point that is never counted never moves you toward that line.
  • Stays out of background checksThe same law keeps the conviction off the driving record an employer can pull.
  • A refresher on the rules of the roadOur course covers California traffic laws, road signs, right-of-way, defensive driving, distracted driving, road rage and alcohol.

How traffic school works

  1. Check your courtesy noticeThe court mails it after your ticket is filed. It lists the fine, the due date and whether traffic school is offered. If it does not arrive, contact the court before the date on your ticket.
  2. Request traffic school and payPay the fine plus the court’s traffic school fee ($52 in Alpine County) by the due date, online, by mail or in person.
  3. Choose a DMV-licensed schoolEvery California court accepts any school on the DMV’s list. Ours is license E1314.
  4. Finish before the court’s deadlineUsually 60 or 90 days. Our course takes two to three hours, and the $27.99 is paid only after you pass. Extensions by county.
  5. We report your completionTo the court and the DMV the same day. The conviction becomes confidential and no point is counted.

How traffic school works in California, in detail.

When it isn’t worth it

  • The ticket has no point to keep offFix-it tickets for equipment, registration or proof of insurance, and parking tickets, never reach your driving record. There is nothing for traffic school to do.
  • The court will not allow itFor example a violation worth two points, such as DUI or reckless driving, or traffic school already used for another ticket in the last 18 months. Your courtesy notice says whether you qualify.
  • You cannot finish by the deadlineThe point posts anyway, and many courts state that the fee is non-refundable. If the deadline is close, ask the court for an extension before it passes.
  • Two tickets inside 18 monthsTraffic school covers one of them. Use it on the ticket the court allows, and expect the other to go on your record.

Eligibility is the court’s decision, and a few courts add their own rules. Full eligibility rules.

Receipt B is the court’s traffic school fee plus our $27.99 course. Receipt A is the county’s median increase for one traffic ticket, across every insurer and surveyed place, for the three years a point stays. * The court does not publish its own fee; the $52 state base (Vehicle Code 42007.1) is used, marked ≥ where the court publishes nothing. Sources: each county’s superior court, verified September 14, 2026; California Department of Insurance premium survey, rates effective January 1, 2026, standard single-driver profile. “Typical driver” figures weight each county by its 2024 licensed drivers (DMV).

Questions people ask

Is traffic school worth it in California?
For an eligible ticket, almost always. Our course is $27.99, paid only after you pass, and the court charges a fee to allow traffic school, $52 to $82 depending on the county. Skipping it puts a point on your record, and in the California Department of Insurance premium survey that point adds $1,013 a year to car insurance for the typical California driver, $3,039 over the three years it stays. Traffic school comes out ahead in all 58 counties, with every insurer in the survey.
Is it cheaper to just pay the ticket?
Only on the day you pay. The fine is the same either way. Traffic school adds our $27.99 course and your court's fee, and for the typical driver the higher premium costs more than both within about 31 days.
What are the benefits of traffic school?
Four, all from Vehicle Code 1808.7: the conviction becomes confidential, so no point is counted on your record; your insurer cannot see it, so your rate does not go up for it; it does not count toward a license suspension; and it cannot be disclosed to anyone but a court, so it stays out of driving-record background checks. Our course is also a refresher on California traffic law and safe driving.
Does traffic school remove the point?
It keeps the point from being counted. Finish a court-approved course for an eligible ticket and Vehicle Code 1808.7 makes the conviction confidential: no point is assessed, and the record cannot be disclosed to anyone but a court. You still pay the fine.
Does a ticket show up on a background check if I do traffic school?
Not on your driving record. Vehicle Code 1808.7 says a conviction kept confidential through traffic school may not be disclosed to any person except a court, so an employer that pulls your DMV record does not see it.
Is traffic school worth it if the fine is small?
Yes. The size of the fine does not change what the point costs. 12,623 of the 12,626 quotes in the state survey price one ticket higher, and even the gentlest of the 48 insurers adds a median $135 a year, which passes the highest court fee plus our course within 10 months.
Is traffic school worth it if I don't have car insurance?
Usually still yes. The point stays on your record for three years, so any insurer that quotes you in that time can see it. It also counts toward a suspension: the DMV treats 4 points in 12 months, 6 in 24 or 8 in 36 as a negligent operator (Vehicle Code 12810.5).
What disqualifies you from traffic school in California?
The court decides, and your courtesy notice says whether you qualify. Exclusions court websites commonly list: a violation worth two points (such as DUI or reckless driving), speeding more than 25 mph over the limit, a ticket in a commercial vehicle, misdemeanors, equipment or parking tickets, and traffic school for another ticket in the last 18 months.
Is online traffic school legit in California?
Yes, if the school is licensed by the DMV. Every California court accepts completion from any school on the DMV's traffic violator school list, online or in a classroom. Best Online Traffic School is DMV license E1314.
What happens if I don't finish traffic school in time?
The court reports the conviction with its point, and many courts state that the traffic school fee is non-refundable. The deadline is on your court notice, usually 60 or 90 days. Some courts grant an extension if you ask before it passes.
How often can I go to traffic school in California?
Once every 18 months, counted from the violation date of the last ticket you took traffic school for. If two tickets land inside that window, use it on the one the court allows and pay the other.
How long does traffic school take?
Our course takes two to three hours, on any device, in as many sittings as you like. Completion is reported to the court and the DMV the same day.
